Elbe’de Queen Elizabeth 2 gemisi bütün ihtişamıyla duruyordu ve çok etkilendim.” // “1972 was the date when Queen Elizabeth 2 came to Hamburg for the first time. I was looking for the very large ships on the bridge. Queen Elizabeth 2 was very big on Elbe and I was impressed.”

Biz yakınımızı kaybedince ağlarız; denizler ise dalgalanır... 15 Ekim’de denizin dalgaları soğuk havayı kırarcasına yükseldi. Semih Sohtorik hayata gözlerini yumarken denizi ağlattı. Soğuğu ise sevenlerinin yüreklerine yaydı... // When we lose a loved one we cry; the seas however rise up in waves... The waves of the sea rose as if to slash the cold weather on the 15th of October. While passing away, Semih Sohtorik made the sea cry. And he sent a chill to the hearts of people who loved him...

Üçüncü taraflarca gerçekleştirilen gemi yönetimi, parlak bir geleceğe sahip görünüyor. Armatör veya gemi işletmecilerinin masasını dolduran denizcilikle ilgili kural ve tavsiyelerin miktarı ciddi seviyelere ulaştı. Hatta gemi sayısı açısından daha küçük olan armatör ve gemi işletmecilerinin birçoğu bunlarla başa çıkamamaya başladı. Kimileri daha şimdiden havlu atarak, gemilerini üçüncü taraf şirketlerin yönetimine bırakmayı seçti. // Third party ship management looks to have a bright future. The sheer amount of regulations and recommendations currently landing on an owner or operator’s desk is frightening. So frightening is that in terms of numbers of vessels, most of the smaller owners and operators are unable to cope. Many have already thrown the towel and opted to put their vessels with third party management firms.

Her giriş çıkışta gemiye selam verildiğini, savaş gemilerinin tepesinde Kur’an asılı olduğunu, periskopların 18 m’nin altında kullanılmadığını bilmiyordum. Denizaltı denen metal balinanın midesindeki yaşamın o kadar zor olabileceğini de düşünmemiştim. Hepsini o gün öğrendim. Avustralyalı gemi yapımcısı Austal tarafından üstlenilen yeni tasarım çalışmaları, alüminyum gemilerin nispeten orta hızda çalışan gemilerde büyük avantajları olduğunu gösterdi. // New design studies undertaken by Australian shipbuilder Austal have highlighted that aluminium vessels also have clear advantages for vessels operating at relatively moderate speeds.

2003 yılında Türkiye, gemi inşasında dünya sıralamasında 22. iken şu an geldiğimiz sıra 8.’lik. Yılda 297,000 ton çelik işlerken, 500,000 ton çelik işler duruma geldik. Faaliyete geçme aşamasında olan tersaneler devreye girdiğinde Türkiye gemi inşaatında 6 milyon dwt üretim kapasitesine ulaşacak. // Turkey ranks 8th in the world shipbuilding industry today, while it ranked 22nd back in 2003. The annual steel processing capacity of the country grew from 297,000 tons to 500,000 tons. Türkiye’nin coğrafi uygunluğuna rağmen Türkiye’de gelişememesi, AB üyeliği halinde kabotaj taşımacılığının olumsuz bir süreç yaşayacağı, herkes tarafından gündeme getirilen konular. Çok tartışılsa ve şirketlerin öncelikli girişim maddelerinden biri olmasa da, kabotaj taşımacılığını ileri götürmeye çalışan firmalar da yok değil. // The coastal trade is one of the biggest controversies within the sector.
